La Guardiense's Fiano Janare is one of the labels of the largest producers' cooperative in the Centre-South. Founded in 1960 by 33 far-sighted and courageous members, today La Guardiense has around a thousand of them: all farmers who directly cultivate more than 1,500 hectares of hillside vineyards (around 350 meters above sea level), with an average annual production of 200,000 quintals of grapes. Great attention to environmental sustainability has always been imperative, and this is practiced with integrated pest control in the vineyard and with the use of renewable energy coming from its own impressive photovoltaic system. (Speaking of plants, the cooperative owns one of the largest sparkling wine production plants in the South.) The winemaking management is entrusted to the tandem Marco Giulioli, internal oenologist, and Riccardo Cotarella, external consultant. This Fiano is part of the Janare line: "in Sannio the janare are the witches, mythical figures of civilization and peasant culture who allude to the strong and indomitable character of the women of this land". The vines have their roots in calcareous clay soils, at an altitude between 300 and 400 metres. The grapes are harvested in the first half of September, cryomacerated in reduction, delicately pressed and vinified in steel at a controlled temperature; the short refinement also takes place in steel and the wine enters the bottle the March following the harvest.
FIANO JANARE LA GUARDIENSE: TASTING
Fiano de La Guardiense is straw yellow with greenish shimmers. On the nose it is intriguing, with hints of aromatic herbs, apple, acacia flowers and salty hints; in the mouth it is thin, thirst-quenching, with good acidity and good salt. A perfect summer aperitif, even more so if accompanied with skewers of fresh tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil.
